Gaga foi a grande vencedora da última edição do evento ao levar para casa cinco estatuetas do evento – incluindo Artista do Ano e Música do Ano. Como se não bastasse, a Mother Monster também se tornou a primeira homenageada com o Tri-Con Award (prêmio anteriormente conhecido como Vanguard Award), por seu impacto e seu legado na música, na moda, no cinema e por seu ativismo. Agora, a artista é a 3ª pessoa mais premiada da história do VMA, com nada menos que 18 condecorações.
BTS e The Weeknd também foram homenageados, levando três e dois prêmios, respectivamente. The Weeknd eventualmente foi homenageado com a estatueta de Vídeo do Ano.
